Control System Technician

Sweeney Controls Company is seeking a Control System Technician to be responsible for field service work, ongoing client support, project startup, modifying PLC and HMI programs, and testing of control panels. The Control System Technician will work with process concepts, PLCs, HMIs, and schematics. Travel within ND, SD, MN, and IA, with some overnight stays, is required.

 

The Control System Technician will also interact with customers, field tradespeople and on-site engineers. As such, the Control System Technician will be able to work under pressure, communicate clearly, and provide excellent customer service.

 

The job…

    The Control System Technician is responsible for servicing the needs of our clients by carrying out the following core duties:

  • Meet our clients’ needs, and exceed their expectations by delivering reliable, responsive support, and troubleshooting complex technical issues with an appropriate sense of urgency
  •    o  Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the complete system process, and the function of our control system in that process, and apply this knowledge appropriately, based on the assignment or issue
        o   Utilize PLC software for problem diagnosis and component replacement
        o   Identify issues, provide input, and make recommendations for resolution
       o   Remote support of control systems o Travel to client facilities for onsite field service

  • Do the Right Thing by setting our clients up for success with control system operation training, and educating them to utilize the control system to the fullest
  •    o  Ensure the client understands how their control system functions, and how the control system creates process efficiencies, and streamlines their tasks
        o  Educate the client on how to obtain, and maintain, near 100% uptime of their system
        o   Perform project startup, providing periodic status updates to all stakeholders
       o   Conduct Site Acceptance Testing to ensure the control system functionality
       o   Program soft starters and variable frequency drives

  • Be a Hero to the Sweeney Controls Technical Team by independently resolving day-to-day client inquiries, enabling each team member to focus on their respective primary tasks
  •    o  Act as initial point of contact for all client control system-related concerns, escalating issues as appropriate
        o  Make minor control system modification, and PLC and HMI program modifications to existing control systems
        o   Conduct Factory Acceptance Testing of control systems at Sweeney Controls Facility
       o   Help drive our Vision and fulfill our Mission by performing other tasks when needed

  • Promote superior customer service and Keep it Clean by fostering effective, proactive communication
  •    o  Daily correspondence with clients including fielding client calls, sending project updates, and coordinating project startups
          •   Communicate calmly and clearly regarding progress, potential problems, and solutions to clients, field tradespeople, and on-site engineers
        o   Contribute to the seamless delivery of responsive client service by documenting essential details
          •  Maintain appropriate records and documentation of service work performed and ensure timely follow-up with fellow technical team members concerning service status and potential issues
          •  Ensure records are thorough, so that the issue and its status can be referenced at any time, by any technical team member
       o  Represent Sweeney Controls onsite, via email, and over the phone, cultivating and sustaining client, vendor, and contractor relationships

What we’re looking for…

  • 2 year associate degree in Electrical, Electronic Technology, Mechatronics, Automation, or related field
  • Comfortable around live electricity
  • PLC, HMI, and instrumentation experience
  • Basic computer networking skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to effectively execute on multiple tasks concurrently
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances

Physical Requirements

  • Standing for sustained periods of time
  • Walking through job sites
  • Finger dexterity for electrical wiring and computer work
  • Hearing acuity in order to speak with people in-person and over the phone
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Visual acuity to see detail on a computer monitor and use hand and power tools
  • Exposure to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions
  • Driving a motor vehicle is a required function of this position

Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to travel up to 18,000 miles per year, including overnight stays
  • Working with 120V control systems
  • Working with 480V 3-phase starting equipment including cross-line starters, soft starters, and variable frequency drives
